Position Summary:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation to ill or injured patients. The EMT responds to emergency calls, performs patient assessments, administers basic life support (BLS), and ensures safe transfer to healthcare facilities while maintaining calm, professional, and compassionate patient care under high-stress situations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Emergency Response

  • Respond promptly to emergency calls, following dispatch instructions.
  • Drive and operate emergency vehicles safely under varying conditions.
  • Assess the scene for safety, determine the mechanism of injury or nature of illness, and establish priorities for patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers, paramedics, and hospital personnel.

2. Patient Assessment & Care

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, including airway, breathing, circulation, and neurological status.
  • Administer Basic Life Support (BLS), such as:
  • CPR and AED operation
  • Bleeding control
  • Splinting and immobilization
  • Oxygen administration
  • Treatment for shock and trauma management
  • Monitor and record patients’ vital signs and changes in condition.
  • Assist paramedics in advanced life support (ALS) procedures when required.

3. Transportation & Handoff

  • Safely lift, move, and transport patients using stretchers and lifting devices.
  • Ensure patients are transported to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Provide accurate and concise handoff reports to receiving medical staff.

4. Documentation & Communication

  • Complete Patient Care Reports (PCRs) accurately and promptly.
  • Document all treatments, observations, and responses during the call.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

5. Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance

  • Inspect and restock ambulance equipment and supplies after each call.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of vehicles and medical gear.
  • Report any malfunction, damage, or missing equipment immediately.

6. Professional Conduct & Compliance

  • Follow all state, local, and federal EMS regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing training, certifications, and drills to maintain readiness.
  • Display professionalism, empathy, and teamwork in all interactions.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education:
  • High school diploma or GED (required).
  • Completion of an approved EMT training program (required).
  • Certification & Licensure:
  • State EMT certification/license (required).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification (required).
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (required).
  • Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic certification (preferred, not mandatory).
  • Experience:
  • EMT or emergency response experience (new graduates welcome).
  • Prior experience in emergency response or patient transport is an asset.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of emergency medical procedures and terminology.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in fast-paced, unpredictable environments.
  • Physical strength and stamina for lifting and moving patients.
  • Compassionate and calm demeanor during stressful situations.
