Pathologist 


Position Summary

The Pathologist is responsible for diagnosing diseases by examining tissues, cells, and bodily fluids using laboratory methods such as microscopy, molecular testing, and histopathology. The role supports patient care by providing accurate and timely diagnostic information to clinicians and contributing to quality assurance and lab management.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnostic Duties

  • Examine tissue biopsies, surgical specimens, and cytology samples to identify abnormalities or disease.
  • Review and interpret results from histologic, cytologic, molecular, and immunologic tests.
  • Prepare and sign out pathology reports with clear diagnostic conclusions.
  • Consult with referring physicians on complex or ambiguous cases.

Laboratory Operations

  • Oversee and ensure quality control and quality assurance standards in the pathology laboratory.
  • Collaborate with laboratory technologists and technicians to optimize workflows and testing accuracy.
  • Participate in the selection, validation, and implementation of new diagnostic techniques and equipment.

Clinical Collaboration

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (tumor boards, clinical reviews).
  • Advise clinicians on specimen collection, test selection, and interpretation of results.
  • Provide urgent intraoperative consultations, including frozen section evaluations.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records following regulatory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation bodies, and legal requirements (e.g., CAP, CLIA).

Research & Education (if applicable)

  • Teach medical students, residents, or fellows.
  • Participate in or lead research projects related to disease mechanisms, diagnostics, or laboratory innovation.
  • Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Education & Training

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, or combined AP/CP.
  • Fellowship training in a subspecialty (e.g., hematopathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology) preferred depending on the role.

Licensure & Certification

  • Board certification or eligibility in AP, CP, or AP/CP (e.g., ABP certification).
  • Valid medical license in the state of practice.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills for report writing and clinician collaboration.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage high case volumes.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems, digital pathology platforms, and microscopic techniques.
