Job Description

Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients of all ages in a safe, accurate, and compassionate manner. This role involves proper labeling, handling, and transporting of specimens, while maintaining patient comfort and adhering to laboratory and regulatory protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Blood Collection & Specimen Handling

  • Perform venipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, and capillary blood collection according to standard procedures.
  • Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of blood and other specimens.
  • Follow infection control, safety, and biohazard protocols.

2. Patient Interaction & Support

  • Prepare patients for specimen collection and explain procedures clearly.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after collection.
  • Provide compassionate care to patients, including children, elderly, or patients with special needs.

3. Laboratory Coordination

  • Transport specimens to appropriate laboratory departments promptly.
  • Maintain records of specimens collected, tests performed, and patient information.
  • Assist laboratory staff in preparing samples for analysis when needed.

4. Compliance & Quality Control

  • Follow all CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA regulations regarding patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Ensure accuracy in sample labeling, documentation, and data entry.
  • Participate in quality control and proficiency testing programs.

5. Equipment & Inventory Management

  • Maintain phlebotomy equipment, ensuring proper sterilization and functionality.
  • Monitor and replenish supplies, including needles, tubes, and protective equipment.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • Certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: 0–2 years of experience in clinical or laboratory settings preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficient in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle difficult situations calmly.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, infection control, and regulatory compliance.
